Social Constructivism
Musing on the application of social constructivism in the world of wellbeing.
Social constructivism is a pedagogical orientation within the education sector that highlights the importance that social interaction and assistance from others plays in our ability to learn, change and grow. Constructivism views each individual as an active participant in the creation of their own knowledge, ie we are not simply empty vessels waiting to be filled with knowledge, rather it is in direct relationship with our previous experiences, our social constructs, our personal inclinations and more broadly, with our understanding of the world that we can come to build our own understanding of concepts. Learning can and does take place in every setting, in every area of life, however the additional layer of social interaction in learning can allow us to conceptualise and imagine the concepts being presented in ways that far exceed our independent capacity. Each participants individual conceptualisation of subjects adds delicious dimensions to even the most simple of concepts. Think about it, how often have you been in conversation only to realise that each person in the group has an entirely different understanding not only of a concept but of individual words! This layer of socialisation within our learning adds a beautiful complexity to our knowledge acquisition and integration.
So how can we intentionally utilise this understanding of learning within the wellness sector? Firstly I would like to define what I mean by the “wellness sector” in this case. In the context of this blog I am using the term to refer to the coaching industry, education and courses relating to things like; manifestation or other universal laws, embodiment of the divine feminine, money block, self development practice and education, additionally I mean to include women’s circle type gatherings where knowledge and experience is shared. You get the vibe of what I am referring to. In my own enrollment into and involvement with a wide variety of practitioners, educators and facilitators within this sector I have seen many different orientations to teaching and learning. I have seen many strengths and many weaknesses within this space. I would say that the core “issue” or area for development I have identified is the need for more intentional learning design. This means to be considered in how you design, approach and create your courses, workshops or sessions. There are many factors to consider when designing for personal growth and awareness. I will provide a more comprehensive overview of the learning design process in another post. For now I would like to specifically consider the social element in the development of learning.
If we take the understanding stated above that social interaction enhances the learning experience how then might we design in such a way the leans on the sharing of experience? There are many ways to approach this, in my personal experience of creating and running many courses I have found that the key to fostering an energy of social constructivism lies in creating safety within the group. A sense of safety and acceptance amongst participants is crucial in the ability for each person to authentically share. Without the creation of safety people will likely be closed off and unwilling to share their own experiences and understanding.
Once a safe space has been created, the next consideration is the scaffolding of learning into new understandings. This requires two things; a basic understanding of where your students currently stand in their knowledge of the concept presented and a clear knowing of where you would like to take them. Put simply, speak to your students, get to know a bit about their journeys and orientations (know your students) and know very clearly where it is that you are leading them (know your learning outcomes).
Each of these three core concerts will be expanded upon in their very own blog posts. Subscribe to keep an eye out for a more in depth consideration of; Creating safety, knowing Your students and Knowing where the fuck you are going. I will be directly reflecting on my own experiences in each of these spaces!
